Peddinghaus Software Progress = Happy Tekla Users
Peddinghaus Corporation was pleased to attend the Tekla 2010 Users’ Meeting held last week in Atlanta, GA. Attending for Peddinghaus were Jim Sutliffe, Vice President of Engineering; Lyle Menke, Vice President of Marketing; and Istok Budic, Advanced Software Development Manager.

Peddinghaus introduced the latest Tekla API program which features a direct link to the Tekla model. Thus, data can be fed directly to the Peddinghaus CNC equipment from the model for a fast, seamless integration of the information. By eliminating previous steps, the entire model to machine process is streamlined.

The conference featured Mr. Charles Thornton of Thornton-Thomasetti Contractors who provided the key note address for the group. Mr. Thornton commented on the “computer age” of construction where it is necessary for building projects to be completed as quickly as possible. This is feasible via today’s modern technology – including sophisticated machine tools that are fast, accurate, and dependable. Tools such as Peddinghaus new carbide drills, “speed sawing” band saws, and high speed plate processing machines are rewriting the book on Just In Time fabrication.

L&M Fabrication & Machine, Inc.
What does it take to thrive in today's unpredictable markets?

Few will dispute that the rules of business have changed during the last several years. With many organizations claiming to see light at the end of the tunnel there is still no argument – business as usual, is no longer business as it was. Fabricators that are able to find new markets and diversify their backlog will in no doubt benefit now and into the future.

L&M Fabrication & Machine, Inc. located in Bath, PA can attest that the world is a different place than it was in 2007 – but their lean production and diversified workload has continued to foster growth even as some markets continue to be unpredictable.

EDYCE: Being on Top at the “Bottom of the World”

There are many firms who advertise in today’s media offering “Business Solutions” – like they have a magic wand that provides answers for today’s tough market. Most of these companies have never engaged in structural steel fabrication, and have no conception of how to bring value to a steel beam or profile.

There is a structural steel fabricator based in Concepcion, Chile, who offers not just business solutions to his clients, but ENGINEERED Solutions. And they provide these solutions with a professional, partnering relationship that not only obtains new clients – but maintains them for future business. How does Edyce Ingenieria S.A. do it? They start by employing over 70 degreed, professional engineers – each of whom are ready to travel, engage – and lend expertise to every project from beginning to end.

AAA STEEL: Freezing Shop Costs With Today’s Technologies
Have you ever visited Calgary, Alberta, Canada? It is a beautiful, progressive city with the spectacular Canadian Rocky Mountains as a backdrop - home to the Winter Olympics in 1988.

Ever visited Calgary in January? The temperature at arrival was – 5 degree F (- 20 C). “Typical winter’s day,” say the local inhabitants. Why do we mention the weather? Because even in some of the coldest climate conditions in the world, a progressive fabricator use new technologies to grow their business – regardless of ice and snow.

METALOGALVA: Sustain Business, Today’s Environment
Sustainability is a word that is freely used in today’s global society, and is commonly used in the steel construction industry where a structure may require LEED certification to meet certain environmental standards. But sustainability is much more than “thinking green” – it is providing quality, value driven products that sustain the future: the future of a company, its’ employees/their families, and the industry it serves, not solely the environment.

Trinity Steel: Lean Fabrication in Lone Star State

Trinity Steel Fabricators based in Trinity, Texas brings a new meaning to the words "Lean fabrication". Ask Roy Karnes Jr., President of Trinity Steel and he'll be the first to tell you that their smart operations and acceptance of modern technology have made a significant difference in their over 30 years in steel fabrication. With work based primarily in the petro-chemical and power industries but also in the marine and mining industries, Trinity builds quality into every step of their processes. Genrec: Big Challenges = Big Rewards
Fabricating the structural steelwork for the Burj Al Arab was an unprecedented challenge, based on the huge columns and intricate truss work required for this unique structure and the cantilevered heli-pad on the upper floors required especially demanding technology and skills to erect. So where in world could a fabricator be found that was up to and able to deliver on this challenge? It was a fabricator with years of experience that is no stranger to difficult and complex projects requiring huge fabrications with precise dimensions. The structural fabricator for the Burj al Arab was Genrec, a provider of innovative steel solutions, based near Johannesburg in South Africa.

Steel Fab of Charlotte
"It has been said that a man is known by the company he keeps. And it is no more true than in business, where men are known by the companies they create and the clients they serve." – This statement by J. Glenn Sherrill, founder of SteelFab Incorporated, is evident today at their Charlotte, North Carolina headquarters. 54 years since its inception SteelFab, Inc. continues to be a family owned and operated organization driven by customer satisfaction and powered by an incredibly talented group of individuals.

Barone Steel Fabricators

Located in the heart of New York City (the borough of Brooklyn) is a unique structural steel fabricator with deep family roots. Two brothers, Nick and Ralph Barone, guide the firm with enthusiasm – fed by the kindred spirit of a dedicated work ethic and commitment to quality. Defining Success in the Steel Construction Industr
How is success defined in the steel fabrication or the steel construction industry? Is it determined by the geographic scope of business? Is it determined by the tonnage a firm can fabricate annually? Perhaps success is defined by the number of high-profile, prestigious jobs fabricated per year? Or, maybe success is more subtle. Samuel Grossi and Sons, Inc., located in Bensalem, PA, just outside of Philadelphia has its own definition. Company President Bob Grossi, P.E., defines success as, “Consistently remaining technologically current, family focused and respectful of our customers, other structural fabricators, the AISC-industry peers and our business partners. It has served us well for the 40+ years I have been involved in the industry.” An interview with Bob, John and Gene, Jr. reveals much about how this attitude has been passed down through the three generations that have been involved in the company.

Traditional American Values, Modern American Tech.

When you think about Kansas, what comes to mind? You might picture the wide expanses of wheat fields, Kansas sunflowers, or call to mind the traditional American lifestyle you would see in a Norman Rockwell painting. A healthy respect for the simpler things in life rings true throughout the state but a quick tour of Central Steel in Wichita, Kansas proves that the combination of classic hard working America and the innovation of modern technology make for a winning combination.

Peddinghaus is saying yes to 2009
Peddinghaus is not naïve to today’s economic conditions. We fully absorbed John Cross’ February 15 AISC report about the current state of steel construction in the USA. However we prefer to accept this challenge in a positive manner, with our glass always “half full”. During our many visits to your facilities, and numerous conversations, many of you have expressed confidence in our economy and the steel construction marketplace. Granted, it is much tougher now, but there are opportunities.

Joint Venture — Never an Adventure
A visitor to Quebec soon learns of the strength of the structural steel fabrication industry in the province. Many shops are engaged in the steel construction industry and are strategically located near the St. Lawrence River. In such a concentration of fabricators, how does one shop stand out? Easy, by creating its own niche – focusing on the strength of its people, its management, and their collective creativity; Metal Perreault has carved out a unique identity as a high quality fabricator: not just in Quebec – but in all of North America.

Leading the Steel Revolution

The Outback of Australia has been known for many years as yet another “Concrete Jungle”. With 67 percent of all construction being concrete buildings, the steel construction industry has long played a secondary role in the Land Down Under.

Leading a revolution that includes the retro-fitting of pre-existing concrete structures Page Steel has a new vision for the future of steel construction in Australia. Teaming up with Peddinghaus, and applying their unique blend of talents, Page Steel is an all-around modern success story.

A Sense of Tradition… With a Sense of Humor
One of the most unique aspects of the steel construction industry – especially in structural fabrication – is the proportionately large number of family owned businesses. It seems that many companies were founded by Grandpa, and then turned over to Dad, and then to the next generation. It leaves you with a sense of tradition, something that keeps your feet firmly planted on the ground. Family businesses are a foundation of our economy, our business philosophies, and our culture, itself.

If you want to witness a true vision of the American dream – a thriving family business engaged in structural fabrication – pay a visit to Brighton, Colorado. In the “high desert” of the Rockies, you will observe what persistence, achievement, and family values have in common. Stop in at Redd Iron and see how family and business interact – profitably and happily – with a sense of humor.

Process Minded Means Profit Margins

In today’s steel market fabricators need to control costs and rethink their processes to stay competitive. For some this may be a call to action but for others it is territory already covered and solutions have been implemented.

A People Center–Not a Profit Center

You see the word “technology” everywhere. Today’s consumer is bombarded with the word, which always conjures up thoughts of some finite electronic design genius that will make your life easier and more enjoyable. One steel fabrication firm, located in the American Heartland, has a different twist on technology.

Serving Your Industry Pays Dividends
The descriptive name for the steel supply industry may vary from country to country— some call it “steel stock holders” or “steel stocking center” or “steel service center”—but the intent is the same. Any firm that engages in the distribution of structural steel must be dedicated to their customers, and provide first class services with timely deliveries. One of the premier firms in today’s global market is F. Hackländer GmbH, Kassel, Germany.

The football season was winding down in late January, when Eckhard Schultz, General Manager of Stewart-Amos Steel Co, Harrisburg, PA, asked Steve Farrow, Peddinghaus’ N.E. Regional Manager to stop by. Stewart-Amos Steel was a pioneer in early automation having installed a Peddinghaus TDK-1000-3 Drill line on April 16, 1987. Visits by the “Peddinghaus Man” were not uncommon, but today would be more than just a chat about the upcoming Super Bowl and how big was their backlog.

CODEME: Building SUCCESS from Higher EDUCATION
How many times have you heard college students admit, “I’m not sure what my future is after college”, or “I hope I obtain a job in the field of my choice”. College students are always filled with apprehension when they consider the future. What is out there for me? Is this a step in the right direction for my career? Some surveys even reveal that less than 30% of college graduates obtain a position in the field of their study. Let me tell you a story about four college engineering students. Four students who worked their way through a challenging college curriculum to receive their diplomas. Four students who became fast friends in time spent together studying and sharing college life.
