Of special interest in this issue is the information on the North American Steel Construction Conference (NASCC) sponsored by the American Institute of Steel Construction. This is the single, largest exhibition in the world that is solely committed to steel construction and structural fabrication. Every segment of the industry is addressed from machine tools to erection practices to engineering issues to painting. This year’s event will be held in Nashville, TN USA April 2 – 4. As always, Peddinghaus plays a pivotal role in the sponsorship and agenda of each year’s conference.
A highlight of this issue is the “Plate Buyer’s Roundtable” discussion. Fabricators from the UK, Dubai, USA, and Canada responded with insight on where they believe plate fabrication is headed. Steel costs are continually rising, and the consensus thought from progressive fabricator is to purchase large sheets rather than pay for cut “strips”. The inventory cost saving is dramatic, and scrap costs are reduced. Additionally, thermal cutting speed and ability to contour cut to any shape or dimension are especially important because of today’s complex connections and fabrications
This Spring issue contains many interesting and educational topics, and focuses on two fabricators, and their affect on the structural steel fabrication marketplace.
- Manufacturas Metalicas Ajax, is a premier fabricator in Mexico City, who pioneered high rise steel construction in Latin America
- The owner of George Steel Fabricating participated in a tour to Ireland and the UK last year, and learned the importance of material handling from his Irish brethren. This helped him grow his firm from 3,500 to 10,000 tons per year.
