DXF Import

Learn how to import DXF in Raptor.

Hello again. I'm Duane Bates, the pre-installation and training department manager at Peddinghaus. The purpose of this video is to show you how to import DXF files in Raptor.

We start by going to file > import > DXF. The DXF window opens up. Add the files you want to import. We're going to start with demo_1. Click open. On the options tab, select the profile you want to import. This particular profile happens to be UPN 140. You can also set the DXF units to be inches. Although, in most cases they are not. Whether foreign or domestic, they generally do not need this box checked.

The shape options tab has different tabs for different profiles. They are all essentially the same. There are a few differences between angle and channels because of the shape of the profiles. It allows you to set up each different profile the way you want to set it up. You may do one thing on a channel that you wouldn't on an angle. Since we're importing a channel at this time, we will work on the channel tab. Here I can say whether or not I am going to import this. I can also select which features I want to import: copes, holes and pop marks. You'll notice there are no scribes. All lines within a DXF files will be imported as cope or a line that defines the perimeter of the surface itself, such as a flange or web. Any other lines will be imported as cope lines.

The DXF reference is the reference point for all features on the part, whether they're copes or holes. I'm going to set them all to be X'Y for all surfaces. I can tell it whether or not to create flange copes from copes on the flange edge. In this case, I do not need that to be selected. I'm going to uncheck it. These are any lines that are running along the edge of the surface. They can be used to define that surface. You can set the maximum round hole diameter. I have it set for 38mm. Maximum oval/slotted hole diameter is set for 50. Maximum square hole width is set for 20. Anything that is larger than these values, a square hole that's larger than 20, will be turned into copes. If I had a 55mm long slot, regardless of the width, it will automatically turn into a cope. This is because it's larger than this value. That is what these maximum values are for.

I can set the maximum pop mark diameter. In this case I set it for 3mm. Any circular holes or features on the part that are 3mm and smaller will turn into pop marks. You can set an exterior/interior tolerance if you need to. If your lines don't go all the way to the edge of the surface, this can be used a a tolerance to help that. I leave this at 0 assuming the part is drawn correctly. You can also convert a point to a pop mark. If there is a point in the DXF files it will be turned into a pop mark. If channel is drawn with the legs away or down we can choose to import it that way. In this case, the legs are towards us. We are going to import it without this checked.

Go back to the general tab. Hit go. You can see one shape is created. Close this window and double click the part. We see this long row of holes, as well as the other holes and lines. You can see copes on both ends. They are flange miters but are importing as copes. That part is imported. Import the other part that we have. Go to import > DXF > add files. Click on demo 2 and open. 

On the options tab select your profile. The profile is a UPN 120. Click okay. Because I already have my shape tab set up I can go back to the general tab and hit go. 

If I wanted to import multiple files I could. I can import more than one profile at a time as long as they are all the same profile. In this case, as long as they're all UPN 120's, I can import multiple files at the same time.

Hit go. It shows the part was imported. Close the window and double click the part. It shows me the part with the cope features on the web and holes in the top flange. There's a miter on this end as well. That's how you import DXF files in Raptor.
