For over half a century, John Jones Steel has remained one of the largest and most advanced structural steel fabrication shops in New Zealand. Covering the entire south island with locations in both Christchurch and Timaru, they execute every stage of the fabrication process. With a PeddiBlast shot blasting system, PeddiWriter layout marking machine, Advantage-2 drill/saw tandem system and an ABCM-1250 thermal cutting line, end product quality at John Jones is unmatched.

John Jones Steel was founded in 1964 by my father and my mother.

I've been brought into the business from every Saturday since the day I was five-years-old. I've done everything by sweeping the floor, making the tea, and I've done the whole lot.

We've got two sites, one in Christchurch, one in Timaru Christchurch we're 14,000 square meters and in our Timaru workshops 4,500 square meters.

The annual tonnage capability obviously varies, but we could easily go up to 8,000 tons.

Our operation before Peddinghaus was very basic--the gas cutting and a little bit of saw cutting, and manual welding.

You need a lot of space to put through the work.

Peddinghaus technology is playing a big part in all our projects these days, because we know with all the equipment that we've got in Peddinghaus we can tackle any job economically and efficiently and deliver clean product to the client.

We've got really good social connections. They involve other fabricators in visiting factory tours around the world. So there's a good network.

The customer service is great. They've got dedicated staff on call who tend to your needs. They've got the 24-hour phone service.

Benefits of the Peddinghaus equipment has been huge in terms of flow through workshops. It's become more process work as opposed to individualized work.

The advantages of the drilling machine are that it can push through the beams pretty quickly without having to mark out, and we get the holes done quickly, and efficiently, and accurately.

PeddiBlast makes it look good before it goes through the other machinery. It's cleaned to the steel.

We don't have to necessarily store our steel inside, a lot of it is though. So if I choose to forward buy a lot of product, I can store it outside and I know that it's going to be clean once we process it.

The PeddiWriter is an incredibly fast machine. Being blasted and then going through the line obviously makes it easy to see these identification marks that the PeddiWriter puts on.

It saves the guys measuring. It can mark the position of cleats and plates. So it saves a lot of time.

I had my doubts about the PeddiRotators, but I've put two in here. I've ordered another three.

They don't need to wait for the crane all the time. So it's a very efficient tool. They can spend more time welding, which delivers product better, quicker. And so we're going to get some more.

I think John Jones Steel has a future in the South Island as the number one steel fabricator and erector.

We've also now been approached for a couple of projects in the North Island to see if we're interested and we've indicated we are.

We've got the staff here. We've got the equipment. So why wouldn't we venture a little further.
