My Peddinghaus Story - Owen Steel Company - South Carolina, USA

In the constant evolvement of the structural steel industry, fabricators understand the need to remain competitive using CNC technology. This "My Peddinghaus Story" brings you to Columbia, South Carolina, USA where Owen Steel is busy building a piece of American history. Discover how they are completing 28,000 tons of steel for Tower 3 of the World Trade Center and fabricating "America’s Biggest Real Estate Project" at Hudson Yards in New York, USA with their Peddinghaus CNC machinery.

Mr. Owen, Sr. started it. I think back in the '30s, '35.

We had the plant here, which we started, I think, in 1965.

We learned a lot of valuable lessons, not only here working, but in life.

Most of the steel here is going to be substantial steel. We range anywhere from a couple hundred pounds to we just shipped a couple of pieces of in excess of 70 tons each.

We're doing Tower 3 at the World Trade Center site, which is about 28,000 tons worth of steel.

We have Hudson Yards, which is also in New York City, which is one of the world's largest construction projects, a couple of different schools for NYU.

At New Haven Structural, we specialize in box columns, sandwich columns, plate girders, box girders.

Peddinghaus makes machines that are more suited to our environment. We've looked at a lot of different machines, but they're not suited to our type of structural steel.

A lot of the other companies build machines that are for light structural steel. Peddinghaus builds more machines that are for heavy structural.

We're able to produce plates through the FDB that we used to have to burn by hand and/or burn with a burning machine and drill holes in it.

Now the machine will put these parts out. It will actually mill slotted holes, which reduces the amount of bolts that you need at building.

So we're able to make very large thick connections with slotted holes, rather than making big flat plates with a lot more bolts. It reduces the cost of the buildings, it reduces the cost of the welding. It's saved us a tremendous amount of time and money.

The BDL-1250/9D drill, it produces pieces 30% faster than the BDL-1250/9B.

The new drill is faster. It's more accurate. You can run a lot more material for them.

I like working with Peddinghaus because they work with us.

That's one thing you got to have in a company like this with so many different people, you got to have trust and respect for each other. That's what makes the whole job work better.

They seem to keep up with the industry. As the industry wants to build different steel, their machines will produce different steel.

They also keeping up with the fact that, in this business, there's just not as many qualified employees to do the work that is required on the new type of buildings.

It's required now that we have more machines that do the work for the employees, so that we can get more tonnages and more output through the door.
